Magical Puppetry on Stage & Screen: Our Top Theatre Picks for Families

Today is World Puppetry Day, and to celebrate, we’re spotlighting some of the most magical, creative, and awe-inspiring theatre shows that feature puppetry in all its forms. Whether you're looking for a big West End spectacle, a cosy hidden gem, or something to watch from the sofa at home, there's something here for every young theatre-lover!

🦁 The Lion King (West End)

We couldn’t talk about puppetry without mentioning The Lion King, which just gave its 10,000th performance! A must-see for families, this show has been in the West End for 25 years and has welcomed more than 20 million audience members. With its breathtaking puppetry and awe-inspiring animal designs, it continues to amaze audiences of all ages.

🌸 My Neighbour Totoro (West End)

Back for another season, this beloved Studio Ghibli story is a true theatrical wonder. Featuring giant puppets, shadow play, and enchanting spirit characters, My Neighbour Totoro is a magical blend of Japanese storytelling and stagecraft. A deeply moving show that captures hearts of all ages — don’t miss it!

⛵️ Puppet Theatre Barge (Little Venice, London)

For something smaller and truly special, head to the UK’s only floating puppet theatre! The Puppet Theatre Barge is a magical and intimate venue dedicated entirely to puppetry. This weekend's show tells the tale of a baboon who dreams of flying to the moon — and it’s narrated by sensational Thalissa Teixeira.

Spaces are limited and shows often sell out, so be sure to book early if you're planning a visit!

🐴 War Horse (UK Tour)

Not in London? No problem! The internationally acclaimed War Horse is touring the UK throughout the year. With its life-sized horse puppets and gripping story, this production continues to be a landmark of theatrical puppetry and storytelling.

📺 Want to Watch from Home?

Life of Pi, the five-star smash hit, will be available to stream on NT at Home from 10 April. The show’s puppeteers (who all won an Olivier Award for their work!) bring the animals to life in stunning and imaginative ways. If you're keen to learn more about the process, check out the official education pack in the meantime.

Also worth exploring is Little Angel Theatre, a North London theatre dedicated to puppetry for young people. They have a range of beautifully crafted online shows, including The Tempest, which has been adapted by Hannah Khalil, an exciting emerging playwright.

🎪 A Classic Day Out… With Punch & Judy!

If you're looking for something fun and traditional, don't miss the Covent Garden May Fayre & Puppet Festival this May! It's a joyful celebration of puppetry featuring Punch & Judy and marks Mr Punch's 353rd birthday!

Whether you’re heading to the theatre or watching from home, puppetry has a unique way of bringing stories to life and sparking young imaginations. Happy World Puppetry Day, and here’s to many more magical moments on stage!
